Video Released of Officer Involved Shooting

EPD

As their investigation into an officer involved shooting at Morgan Avenue and Ruston last Thursday continues, Evansville police released dashcam and bodycam video of the incident Monday.

On audio from a nearby security camera, the chaos that played out next to one of Evansville’s busiest streets can be heard as the suspect, thirty eight year old Anthony Scott Sapp, revved the engine of the stolen car he was driving to try to get it unstuck from a snow bank.  Evansville detectives can also be heard yelling at Sapp to get out of the car.

One shot was fired through the windshield after police say Sapp got the car unstuck and headed towards the detectives. Wounded in the right shoulder, dashcam and bodycam video from other arriving officers shows Sapp continuing to fight as a Taser is deployed.

EPD spokesman Sgt. Nick Winsett says it’s clear Sapp did not want to be arrested.

“This was an active fight until we could get him into handcuffs.  These officers were using every kind of pain compliance- everything from Tasers to their own hands and elbows, that sort of thing to gain control over this suspect and get him into custody.”

Sapp remains in the Vanderburgh County Jail. He’s facing charges of aggravated assault, possession of stolen property and resisting law enforcement.
