Suspect Shot by Police Thursday

An Evansville detective shot a stolen vehicle suspect on a busy East Side street Thursday morning.

Update, 4pm Thursday: Evansville police have released the name of the suspect shot by a detective Thursday morning on east Morgan Avenue. 

The suspect is 38 year old Anthony Scott Sapp. Sapp was shot once in the shoulder. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

He faces felony charges of Battery Committed with a Deadly Weapon, Auto Theft and Resisting Law Enforcement.  He is being held at the Vanderburgh County Jail.

Earlier: According to Evansville Police Department spokesman Sgt. Nick Winsett, at 9:55 a.m. central time Thursday, EPD detectives were conducting surveillance on a stolden car.

As the suspect approached Morgan Avenue on Ruston, the car became stuck in the heavy snow. According to Winsett, as the detectives approached the car, the suspect tried to accelerate toward the detectives, one of whom fired one shot through the car's windshield, hitting the driver in the shoulder.

The suspect's name has not been released. His condition is not known, but his wound did not appear to be life threatening. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
