Man Identified After Deadly Standoff

File

Police believe the fatal wound was self-inflicted

Authorities have released the name of the man who was found dead after a standoff at an Evansville apartment complex. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office says 39-year-old Walter Lee Baker Jr. died following a ten-hour standoff at the Colonial Manor Apartments off Henning Avenue.

Coroner Steve Lockyear says an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

Evansville Police said Baker appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The EPD and U.S. Marshals attempted to serve a warrant for Baker Wednesday evening, but the suspect fired a gun at them.

Police returned fire and no officers were wounded.

The EPD said officers negotiated with the suspect into the night but he refused to come out and fired more shots.

Police confirmed Baker was deceased shortly after 8:00 Thursday morning.
