Success is Theme of State of Schools Speech

EVSC

Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Superintendent David Smith delivered his annual State of the Schools address to local Rotarians Tuesday.

Despite the chaos that hit other school districts around the country as the pandemic kept many schools closed this year, the EVSC was open for in-person classes beginning in the fall.

Dr. David Smith credits the workof the EVSC staff and teachers for creating a pandemic learning model that is being copied in other locations.

Some of the highlights:

  • The EVSC distributed over 800,000 meals to children in Vanderburgh County during last spring and summer while schools were closed.
  • They quickly created lesson plans that were broadcast over WNIN Public Television from April into June last year.
  • They worked closely with high school seniors to ensure they finished all their requirements to graduate on-time with their classes.

Going into the next school year, Smith says they’ll look at ways to determine any learning loss for students who did not attend in-person classes and whether any COVID mitigation strategies should be continued during typical cold and flu seasons in the future.
