The three candidates for Evansville mayor squared off in the only televised debate before the 2015 election.
The first 25 minutes of the debate weren’t about the mayor’s race at all, but rather the controversy surrounding former city council candidate Jack Shriber.
Following that, questions from the panel of local reporters turned to the city budget, with Democrat challenger Gail Riecken questioning the need to transfer funds this fall to pay city bills. Republican incumbent Lloyd Winnecke replied that the practice has been common for many years.“It’s no different than when you get paid on Friday, and you’re running a little short on Thursday, so you take some money from savings and put it into checking. That’s what we did.”
Questioning then turned to quality of life issues, which gave independent challenger Steve Wozniak a chance to talk about his support among millennial voters.
