The new Deaconess Aquatic Center is set to open early next month.

Evansville city officials announced Thursday that the ribbon cutting for the new $28 million dollar facility will be Oct. 1 and be open to swimming on Oct. 4.

Standing outside the aquatic center, Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer said the star power of local Olympians had a big impact on getting the center going.

“Obviously, the city needed a replacement for Lloyd Pool. But having an Olympic champion and now we have two Olympic champions from our city. Having them in the sport and as supporters is something that really helps something like this.”

Schaefer was referring to Lilly King and Mikaela Jenkins. He says there will be more information coming out in the next couple of weeks about swimming lessons, recreational swimming and other activities that will be available at the aquatic center.
