Fire Chases People and Pets from Home

File

An early morning fire has displaced three Evansville residents and their pets.

Firefighters were dispatched to the duplex at 2413 Joan Place, in Diamond Villa, just after midnight Tuesday.

In a release, EFD Division Chief Mike Larson said crews found flames blowing out a bedroom window and front door.

Larson said the fire completely involved the bedroom and extended to other parts of the duplex.

He said firefighters quickly extinguished most of the flames but crews looked for hidden fires before it was considered extinguished about 35 minutes after the call.

Larson said an occupant lit a candle on the headboard of a bed and left the room.

A short while later, an occupant smelled smoked and opened the bedroom door to find the bed on fire.

Larson said residents tried to put the fire out without success. Three adults, a teen, two dogs, and a cat escaped without injury.

The American Red Cross was contacted to help the residents.

The other side of the duplex was unoccupied and not damaged.

Larson said the fire was considered accidental.
