An early-morning fire extensively damaged a house in Evansville.
Firefighters were dispatched to 1119 W. Virginia St., near Fulton, just before 2:30 Monday morning.
In a release, EFD Division Chief Mike Larson said when crews arrived, they found fire coming from an attic window and from the back of the house.
Larson said firefighters entered through the front door but were unable to reach the fire due to the interior arrangement and fire extension into the attic.
Firefighters searched for occupants and found none.
About twenty minutes into the interior effort, the Incident Commander instructed all firefighters out of the house.
They fought the blaze from outside, and it was considered extinguished at 3:30.
Larson said the fire originated in a closet inside the vacant home.
Neighbors said they’d seen homeless activity at the house.
The fire cause is under investigation.
