Deep Cuts Proposed at UE

evansville.edu

Changes in higher education and economic issues are forcing the University of Evansville to consider deep cuts to its programs. The university released a proposed plan Thursday afternoon.

National foundations will double your contribution to support high quality local news in Evansville, but only until Dec. 31st! Please make a contribution today to keep local news strong in our community.

While the proposed cuts won’t take effect until the Fall of 2022, they are deep.

Three departments, music, philosophy and religion and electrical engineering and computer science will be eliminated under the plan. A dozen academic majors associated with those departments will be cut. Five additional majors,  Art History, History, Physics, Political Science, and  Spanish would also be eliminated.

The plan also consolidates UE’s four colleges and schools into three: The William L. Ridgway College of Arts & Sciences, College of Education & Health Sciences, and College of Business & Engineering (including the Center for the Advancement of Learning).

The plan also cuts faculty positions in ten disciplines. Faculty members whose positions are eliminated will be given eighteen months advance notice.

A release from UE says that faculty will have thirty days to review the proposed cuts and the data gathered to support them. The plan will be finalized early next year.

The announcement from UE President Christopher Pietruszkiewicz says the plan is part of a larger realignment for the university. More changes are expected once the academic alignment is finalized.
