Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation officials turned to technology to highlight the work of students at several area high schools.
Just like the athletes who play fall sports, area music students stage intense competitions in the fall to see which school has the best marching band. However, the annual chase to see who represents Southwest Indiana at the state high school marching finals was canceled due to the pandemic.
In order to get some use of the routines they had practiced over the summer, seven area high schools participated in the first-ever EVSC Marching Band Showcase Saturday evening on Facebook Live. The participating high schools were North, Jasper, Bosse, Castle, Reitz, Harrison and Central.
The bands performed at Central High School’s stadium, but with audience limitations imposed because of the pandemic, only a few people could attend the event in person. The Facebook Live feed at times showed over 500 viewers were catching the performances virtually.
There is one more marching band showcase scheduled, on September 19 at North High School.
