Council Looking for Solutions to Evictions, Utility Shutoffs

evansville.gov

The Evansville City Council Monday evening passed a measure to add funding for what everyone seems to agree will be a major issue of the pandemic response.

The council passed a resolution making available $941,088 of federal stimulus funding to various agencies dealing with shelters, homelessness, evictions and utility shutoffs related to the pandemic. Auroa of Evansvillewill receive about forty percent of that funding to assist rental households facing eviction or utility shutoff.

We reported earlier that about 2,800 rental property households in Evansville are facing eviction. A representative of one local property management company told the council that landlords are now getting notices of pending liens on their properties because tenants aren’t paying their water and sewer bills. Speaking on the city’s web stream, Councilman Ron Beane says they’re aware of the issue, but there’s no simple answer.

“They’re really waiting to find out how big the solution’s gonna’ be. Is it a million dollar problem, or is it a two hundred thousand dollar problem?”
