The Vanderburgh County Sheriff calls a training exercise an “important milestone” in preparing for an active attacker.

The sheriff’s office, and Scott Township, McCutchanville, and German Township fire departments held a joint Rescue Task Force training exercise on Thursday.

In a release, the sheriff’s office says members from each agency practiced skills and tactics learned last year during a RTF instructor course.

Sheriff Dave Wedding says law enforcement training and response to active attacker events has significantly improved since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.

Wedding said RTF training is designed to “break down the communication barriers between agencies and get them working together to save lives as quickly and efficiency as possible.”

Thursday’s exercise took place at Trinity Lutheran Church in Darmstadt, with volunteers and facilities provided by the church.

The Sheriff's Office Explorer Post also provided volunteers who served as victim role players.
