Police: Henderson Man Took Own Life During Standoff

A Henderson man is dead after a standoff with police.

In a news release, Henderson Police say officers responded to the 800 block of Kleymeyer St. early Friday after a man fired shots into a home and fled the scene.

Police say they found 52-year-old John Ellis Smith Jr. behind Lawndale Apartments, threatening to kill himself.

Officers negotiated with Smith for several hours, and asked him to put the gun down.

The HPD says officers fired bean-bag rounds to try to take him into custody, but Smith turned the gun on himself and fired. He later died.

The Henderson County Coroner's Office and the Kentucky State Police assisted with the investigation.

Coroner Bruce Farmer scheduled an autopsy in Madisonville.
