A new Indiana law creates stiffer penalties for animal abuse

Local law enforcement is celebrating a new Indiana law to toughen penalties for crimes against animals. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office says House Bill 1165 means prosecutors across Indiana won’t have to charge misdemeanors for the most egregious crimes against animals.

It also includes enhancements for animal abuse in domestic violence situations.

Evansville Police K9 Cash also celebrated the bill’s ceremonial signing, as the measure also makes killing a K9 officer a higher-level felony.

The prosecutor’s office says the bill originated with a phone call to State Rep. Wendy McNamara after the office had to charge horrific animal hoarding cases as misdemeanors.

The office says the Evansville Police Department's Humane Officers also assisted in much-needed changes in state law.

Prosecutor Diana Moers notes animal cases don’t just involve animals – she says it’s also a win for children who are often involved.
