Authorities say Jayvinvontae Keion-Ray Carter, 3, shot himself with a gun he found in a couch; the boy's father faces charges

A three-year-old boy is dead and his father is charged with neglect after an accidental shooting. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Evansville Police were called to a report of shots fired at an apartment in the 1300 block of Florence St. on Saturday.

The caller stated their nephew had shot himself.

The EPD says the toddler, three-year-old Jayvinvontae Keion-Ray Carter, was taken to Deaconess Midtown Hospital where he did not survive his injuries.

Witnesses told police the boy found the handgun under couch cushions inside the apartment.

The EPD say officers later arrested the child’s father, 30-year-old Jovontae Carter.

Police say Carter admitted that the handgun was his and that he stored it in the couch.

Police say detectives later found the gun in a nearby yard.

Carter faces charges of Neglect of a Dependent Causing Death, Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun by a Felon, and Possession of Marijuana.
