Sheriff Robinson says the measure to criminalize homelessness will exacerbate problems

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff is raising concerns about a bill in the Indiana legislature that would criminalize homelessness. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:

Senate Bill 197 would make it a crime to use public property for sleeping or camping.

Sheriff Noah Robinson says he will follow the law if it passes, but he says the measure risks pushing already vulnerable people further into crisis, creating greater burdens on jail and courts.

Robinson says law enforcement is not a substitute for good housing policy or mental health care.

He urges lawmakers and community leaders to consider a more humane, effective, and long-term approach by investing in affordable housing, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and supportive services.

Robinson says he will ensure that deputies continue to exercise discretion and compassion when engaging with homeless individuals.

The sheriff says his office will continue to work closely with partners at Evansville Rescue Mission, United Caring Services, Aurora Evansville, and Southwestern Indiana Behavioral Healthcare.
