Octavia Aquino, age 4, died after being taken to a hospital with "little brain activity"

A four-year-old girl who was found unresponsive in an Evansville apartment has died. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office says Octavia Aquino died at Ascension-St. Vincent Hospital, and an autopsy was planned.

The child was taken to the hospital after being found not breathing in an apartment in the 4500 block of Spring Valley Road on Friday.

Authorities said the girl had “very little brain activity.”

Octavia’s mother, 23-year-old Destiny Rhoades, was at work when her daughter was found.

Police say Rhoades’ 16-year-old boyfriend was in the apartment with three other adult female roommates.

A roommate told police she noticed the child had bruises around her neck last week. She also had a human bite mark on her arm.

Detectives were told the 16-year-old boyfriend admitted he bit the child, but only after she bit him.

Police arrested Rhoades on charges including neglect of a dependent.

Police took the 16-year-old to the Youth Care Center. He faces preliminary charges of causing serious bodily injury and false informing.

More charges are likely now that the child has died.
