Police Focusing on Speeding Drivers

File

The EPD joins the Speeding Slows You Down campaign

You may notice more police on the roads looking for speeding drivers. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

The Fourth of July and the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign are behind us, but Evansville Police say they’ve now teamed up with other law enforcement agencies in Indiana to stop speeders.

EPD Sgt. Anna Gray says officers are on high alert for speeding vehicles through July 31st.

It’s part of a campaign called Speeding Slows You Down and it’s funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

Gray notes 252 people were killed in speeding-related crashes in Indiana in 2021. That number tragically rose to 290 in Indiana last year, with nearly 300 fatalities projected this year.

Gray says even the safest cars with the newest technologies are limited in how much they can help reduce the odds of a crash.

She reminds us “Speed limit signs are not suggestions, they are the law.”
