Toddler Wounded, Mother Charged with Neglect

EPD
Porsha Walker of Evansville

Porsha Walker of Evansville is also accused of drug dealing

An Evansville woman faces charges after her toddler was accidentally shot in the head. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

The EPD says officers were dispatched to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital last (Wed) night for a 3-year-old who had been wounded.

Sgt. Anna Gray said the injury appeared to be non-life-threatening.

The mother of the child, Porsha Walker, told officers she had found a box containing a handgun in her yard in the 800 block of Independence Ave.

She said she brought the box inside, looked at the gun, put it back in the box, and placed it on a dresser.

Walker said the 3-year-old got the gun out of the box while she was tending to her other two children and it fired.

She said she called family members to take them to the hospital.

Police say Walker consented to a search of her home.

Officers said they found a bag inside a closet in the children’s bedroom that contained nearly 300 grams of methamphetamine, nearly five grams of marijuana, and a digital scale.

Police said they found the handgun fired by the child in the kitchen. It had been stolen from a vehicle in March.

Walker was arrested and charged with Neglect of a Dependent causing Serious Bodily Injury, Dealing Methamphetamine, and Theft of a Firearm.

Her three kids were placed with the Department of Child Services and more charges are pending.
