Police administer aid after shooting Kody Schaum, 35, on E. Indiana St. on Tuesday, May 9, 2023

Kody Schaum, 35, allegedly pulled a gun from an SUV as officers ordered him to put up his hands

Evansville Police have released the name of the man shot by two officers on Tuesday. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

EPD Sgt. Anna Gray identified the suspect as 35-year-old Kody Schaum.

He remains hospitalized after being wounded by two officers in the 1500 block of E. Indiana, when he was recognized as wanted on a felony warrant.

Gray says the officers spotted Schaum standing with another man outside an SUV.

She said the officers shouted commands at the two men, and one of them raised his hands and cooperated. But police said Schaum refused to show his hands, reached inside the vehicle, and pulled out a handgun.

Gray said he raised the gun and both officers fired their weapons, hitting Schaum.

Gray said the officers administered aid until an AMR ambulance arrived and took him to a hospital.

The other man was not injured and was released after questioning.

Gray says Schaum will face felony charges when he’s released from the hospital.

The two officers were placed on three-day administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
