Police Kill Tell City Man Accused of Fleeing and Shooting at Officers

Source: ISP

ISP: Early morning pursuit included damage to six police vehicles; no officers were hurt

A Tell City man is dead following a pursuit and officer-involved shooting in Perry County. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Indiana State Police say Cannelton officers tried to stop a pickup truck for speeding on State Road 66 early Friday morning.

The truck turned into the Tell City Walmart, refused to stop, and drove back into Cannelton.

The ISP says the driver, later identified at 22-year-old Payton Masterson of Tell City, fired multiple rounds -- striking the Cannelton police vehicle.

Police say the suspect got out of his truck and fled on foot before stealing another pickup truck and leading police on a chase into Tell City.

Police say Masterson then drove into the Tell City Police Department parking lot and rammed several parked police vehicles before fleeing on foot to his apartment.

The ISP says Masterson was in his second-floor apartment and communicating with police through an open window when he fired his handgun toward officers.

One round struck a Perry County Sheriff’s vehicle and a Tell City police officer returned fire, killing Masterson.

No officers were injured but six police vehicles were damaged.

The investigation continues and an autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.
