Incumbent Evansville mayor Lloyd Winnecke eased past challenger Connie Whitman in Tuesday’s Republican primary.

Winnecke won a whopping 88 percent of the more than 2,200 GOP ballots cast.

"The margin of victory I think is really reflective of how the voters feel the direction of the city is going," the mayor said. "I think that’s affirmation not just of my work but of the great collaboration that’s going on around the city."

Connie Whitman, the mayor’s opponent, said she’s disappointed with the results.

"Be much more fun to be a winner, especially with all the ideas I had," she said.

Whitman said she loves politics and has really enjoyed the past few months.  She said she wants to run for office again, but probably not for mayor.

As for Winnecke, he says his campaign has a strategy in place for the rest of the year.

No Democrat filed to run for mayor during the allotted period, but the party has until the end of June to fill the spot.
