Incumbent second ward city councilwoman Missy Mosby will move on to the general election after defeating primary challenger D'Angelo Taylor. Mosby received 53.5 percent of the vote.
Mosby teared up during her victory speech. "Sorry, it’s very emotional. It’s been a very trying campaign," she told the crowd of supporters. "My family has stuck by me through it all. My friends, my team, everybody, couldn’t have done it without all of you. "
Mosby had a strong lead at first when only early voters and absentee ballots were counted. That lead started to shrink as Tuesday vote tallies trickled in.
She said she was nervous, but she ended the night with 46 more votes than opponent D’Angelo Taylor, according to the unofficial vote count.
Taylor said it was a tough race, and it doesn’t feel great to lose. "But I feel encouraged moving forward that I can still advocate for the issues that I brought forth in the campaign," he said.
Mosby said this race was the worst she’s ever been in.
It’s not entirely over yet. She’s up against Republican Natalie Rascher in November.
