Police Arrest Murder Suspect Bengert

EPD

Police have captured the Evansville man charged with the murder of his three-month-old baby.

Central Dispatch said 28-year-old Jacob Wesley Bengert was taken into custody along railroad tracks near Fares and Morgan avenues just after 2:00 Friday afternoon.

The arrest ended a 36-hour manhunt, in which police checked out numerous sightings from the public.

Bengert faces a preliminary charge of murder for the death of three-month-old Kieran Bengert.

In a news release, the EPD said first responders found the child dead inside a home in the 1300 block of E. Illinois St. Thursday morning.

The baby’s mother, Chelsea Marksberry, was at the home but Bengert had fled.

Marksberry told investigators that Bengert said he was sorry before he left. She faces a preliminary charge of neglect.

The murder warrant against Bengert states the child had burn marks on its face and chest, and what appeared to be cigarette burns on the baby’s hands and feet.  The warrant said the injuries were consistent with “inflicted trauma.”
