Usually, civic officials might consider a cautionary message about holidays like the Fourth of July or New Year’s Eve.

But this is 2020, and what the leaders of half a dozen area communities are most concerned about are Thanksgiving and Christmas. Boonville Mayor Charlie Wyatt was one of the speakers.

“I have buried several of my good friends from COVID," Wyatt said, "I ask you, each and every one of you, think about what you’re doing over the holiday season. Wear a mask, social distance.”

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke hosted the news conference, along with four other mayors and Newburgh's town manager.

Officials with Deaconess and Ascenion St. Vincent also briefed reporters, saying that health care workers are exhausted and patient census is running high at all area hospitals.
