Police urging safety as schools open

It’s back to school for most students in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, and police are urging drivers to be careful.

Drivers can expect an increase in the amount of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, as kids head back to classrooms this week.

Evansville Police say in a news release that motorists need to be patient and allow extra travel time.

The agency reminds drivers that school buses will be making frequent stops, and it’s the law: you must stop in either direction when a bus has its stop arm extended.

Police say officers will be working in a number of school zones, making sure motorists reduce their speed.

They also urge drivers to be aware of crossing guards and to follow their directions.

EVSC elementary schools operate from 8:15 to 3:10. K-through-8, middle, and high schools are open from 7:30 to 2:30.
