EVSC teachers get raises under new contract

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Board unanimously approved a two-year teacher contract Monday.

With $9 million in new funding over the next two years, the starting pay for EVSC teachers will go up to $40,000 a year, while average pay will be $53,800 in the second year of the collective bargaining agreement.

Central High School teacher Shelby Phelps told the board she’s grateful for the raise, but there are several other areas that need improvement as well.

“Although I am getting a salary increase, I’m also seeing an increased cost of insurance. Three out of six of my classes have thirty students. I’m losing at least one planning period a week to cover a class, and I can’t even take a mental health day without being reminded that teachers have an attendance problem.”

The contract also provides incentives for teachers to seek advanced degrees.
