Penguins Swimming and Waddling at Mesker Park Zoo

Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden

A ribbon has been cut, welcoming penguins to Mesker Park Zoo.

Officials dedicated the Penguins of Patagonia exhibit on Tuesday.

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke thanked those who made the $7 million project a reality.

"Wayne and Beth Kinney and their family for their generosity to attach their name to this, we're grateful. To all the corporations, the family foundations, and individuals who have given money whose names are displayed on a really cool exhibit space down by the penguimn exhibit."

Winnecke also praised Zoo Director Eric Beck and his staff.

"I'd like to thank Eric and his leadership team at the zoo for their vision for the zoo, for the care and compassion they have for the animals at the zoo, for everything they bring to the table to make this a better quality zoo."

Mesker officials have said the South American penguins will be displayed outdoors year-around.

They say even in the heat of the summer, the penguins’ water will be kept very cold.
