COVID Surge Cases are Now Becoming Patients

A recent surge in hospitalizations due to the Delta variant prompted Deaconess officials to sound a cautionary tone during a news conference Monday afternoon.

Deaconess President Dr. James Porter says the recent surge in positive cases of COVID-19 is now translating into hospitalizations. He says as of Monday, there are 105 COVID patients in acute care at Deaconess.

Porter says, “Thirty two of those are in the intensive care, and eighteen of those are on ventilators. That's about one in six patients in our acute care hospitals are there as the result of COVID-19.”

Porter says the total number of COVID patients is the highest since the surge in early February. He says eighty seven percent of the patients in their hospitals right now for COVID-19 are unvaccinated.

The percentage of unvaccinated patients on ventilators is even higher. Porter says the breakthrough COVID-19 patients are just not getting as sick as the unvaccinated patients. He says so far, they have only seen one child in the hospital with COVID-19, who has since recovered.
