Man Accused of Stabbing Firefighter

EPD

An Evansville man is accused of stabbing a firefighter.

Evansville Police say first responders were dispatched to a report of a man not breathing in the 4800 block of Ridge Knoll Drive Saturday afternoon.

In a release, the EPD said firefighters arrived and heard yelling from inside the home.

Police say one of the firefighters opened the door and announced crews were on the scene, and a man reached around the door with a large knife and stabbed the firefighter’s face, causing a puncture wound.

The EPD said the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old John E. Deer, tried to stab the firefighter again, but failed and firefighters gained control of him until police arrived and took him into custody.

Deer’s girlfriend told investigators that prior to EFD arriving, she had to administer Narcan to Deer and had attempted CPR on him.

She said Deer finally responded to the Narcan, became combative, and attacked his 86-year-old-grandfather, who chose not to press charges against Deer.

Deer was charged with Level 5 Felony Battery against a firefighter.

He was taken to a hospital and then booked into the Vanderburgh County jail.
