New Zoning Ordinance Explained at Hearing

New regulations for what and where you can build, and how you use your property are being written in 2021.

The last major update of zoning ordinances in Vanderburgh County was in 1962.

During a virtual public hearing Tuesday evenig, hearing organizer Cynthia Bowen, with the Indianapolis firm Rundell Ernstberger Associates, had an example of the need for change.

“It has such things as a haberdashery. That's not a term that's used any more for a general store, so we’ve changed that term and it will no longer be found in the ordinance.”

The Unified Development Ordinance, or UDO as it is known, is a major rewrite of zoning regulations for the city and county. The UDO will be presented for adoption in phases, starting later this year.

The draft plan for phase one is available on the project website
