Authorities have released the identity of an Evansville man who was shot to death in a vehicle on First Avenue.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner has identified the victim as 25-year-old Dashambe Ignacio Atkins.

Central Dispatch sent officers to a report of shots fired near the intersection of First Avenue and Virginia Street at about 3:20 Monday morning.

In a release, the EPD said one of the callers heard several shots and another reported a motor vehicle crash in the area.

Police say when officers arrived, they found the crashed vehicle with Atkins inside, deceased.

Due to the large amount of shell casings, it’s believed he was shot while waiting for the traffic light to change at First and Virginia.

Police said his vehicle sped through the intersection after the gunfire and then crashed.

A similar crime was reported early Saturday at Pollack and Riverside, where a driver was shot several times.

Officers treated his wounds at the scene until an ambulance crew arrived, but he died at a hospital.

Anyone with information on either incident is urged to contact the Evansville Police Department at 812-436-7979, or the We Tip Line at 800-78-CRIME.
