As pandemic conditions continue to improve in Evansville, a major part of the community’s response is going to be phased out, but its work will continue.
Feed Evansvillewas launched last year as local officials scrambled to address food insecurity made worse by the pandemic. At its height, the group was distributing seven thousand boxes of food a week during drive through events at the Hartke Pool parking lot.
Wednesday, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Feed Evansville organizer Lisa Vaughan announced the group’s weekly food distribution will end next month. The newly created Commission on Food Security will assume responsibility for coordinating future efforts.
Vaughan says Feed Evansville was never intended to be permanent and she’s satisified the issue of food insecurity will continue to be addressed.
“Some people have asked me if I’m sad this is coming to an end. I don’t see this as end. I see it as a new chapter and a new beginning.”
The final Feed Evansville distribution will take place on June 30th.
