One western Kentucky county is joining others in the Commonwealth in updating their driver’s license system to comply with latest security measures.
Hopkins County is one of nine more counties in Kentucky that are switching from the traditional model of having driver’s licenses renewed by the county circuit court clerk’s office.
The change to using a regional center for renewing licenses will take place in April. The entire state will change from the old system by the July of next year.
The new system will have online appointment scheduling, with residents being able to renew or change their license at any of the regional centers.
One important note: Kentucky residents who want to use their driver’s license to get through airport security, for example, will have to obtain what’s known as a Real ID version of their driver’s license by October 1, 2021.
