Chandler Woman Killed in Crash During Foggy Conditions

ISP

A Chandler woman is dead following a crash in foggy weather near the Vanderburgh-Warrick county line.

Authorities responded to the three-vehicle crash at State Road 62 and Epworth Road at about 7:30 Tuesday morning.

In a release, Indiana State Police said a preliminary investigation revealed a tractor-trailer had stopped on eastbound 62 at a red light.

The ISP said 70-year-old Sheila Shofstall of Chandler was stopped behind the semi, when 44-year-old Vernon Knepp of Washington failed to notice traffic was stopped and his pickup truck slammed into the rear of Shofstall’s car, pushing it into the rear of the semi-trailer.

Shofstall was pronounced dead at the scene.

Knepp was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville and driver of the semi – an Alabama man -- was taken to Deaconess Gateway. Both had non-life threatening injuries.

A passenger in Knepp’s vehicle was not injured.

The eastbound lanes of State Road 62 between I-69 and Epworth Road were closed for about 3 ½ hours.

The ISP continues to investigate.
