A Henderson man described as a serious violent felon has been arrested in Evansville.
Indiana State Police say a trooper patrolling near Fulton Avenue and Ohio Street Thursday afternoon stopped a driver for making an unsafe lane movement.
In a release, the ISP said the driver identified as 29-year-old Kelvin Simmons of Henderson rolled up his window and began to search for something in the passenger seat when the trooper asked him to get out of the car.
Police say the trooper tried to open the door but it was locked.
After continuing to order Simmons out of the car, police say he got out and was placed in handcuffs without further incident.
The ISP said a search of the car revealed a fully loaded handgun with armor piercing rounds under a backpack on the passenger seat.
Officers say they also found a small amount of marijuana and another fully loaded magazine.
Police arrested Simmons and took him to the Vanderburgh County jail where he’s being held without bond.
He faces preliminary charges including Possession of a Handgun by a Serious Violent Felon and Possession of Marijuana.
Evansville Police assisted the ISP at the scene.
