Major Jason Ashworth had to hold back tears before speaking to the bipartisan gathering.
He told them school safety is an important issue for him…
"I have a wife who is a 28-year teacher at the EVSC. I have a daughter that's now a teacher here. It goes without saying that schools are going to be very important to me."
Ashworth joined the sheriff’s office in 1993 as a corrections officer, and the state has ordered the current county jail to expand…
"We have a lot of options right now to build and create facilities for our less violent offenders in that facility. We're going to work with our community leaders."
Incumbent Sheriff Dave Wedding attended Ashworth’s campaign kick-off. State law prohibits Wedding from running for a third term.
