Man Accused of Shooting Victim, House

EPD

Police have arrested a man following a shooting near Downtown Evansville.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of S. Linwood at about 9:30 Monday night.

The caller told Central Dispatch that her home had been hit multiple times by gunfire.

In a release, EPD Sgt. Nick Winsett said officers found shell casings in the street in front of the home.

Police said six people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, including children.

The EPD says a short time later, authorities were called to the 700 block of Ridgeway Ave., where a person had been hit by gunfire in the left shoulder.

Officers on Linwood received another call about a person with a gun, later identified as 24-year-old Dawnqua Lamont Shemwell, jumping a nearby fence with a gun in his hand.

Police say an E.P.D. K9 team found Shemwell hiding between two security fences, with a stolen handgun.

Officers arrested Shemwell on preliminary charges including Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of Stolen Property, and Dealing Marijuana.

He’s being held in the Vanderburgh County jail.
