Inspectors: Twin Bridge OK After Barge Strike

File

Inspectors have determined a barge that hit one of the Twin Bridges caused no structural damage.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a commercial barge made contact with a pier on the northbound Twin Bridge at about 5:00 Monday evening.

In a release, the cabinet said the Coast Guard determined the barge had struck or “scrubbed” against the pier.

Inspectors reviewed the area where the incident occurred and determined there was no structural damage to the bridge.

The northbound span is the oldest of the two bridges that connect Evansville and Henderson. It opened to two-way traffic in 1932.

The second bridge opened in 1965.

The transportation cabinet says about 40,000 vehicles cross the bridges per day.
