Owensboro Police say a child is safe after a car was stolen with the child in the vehicle.

In a release, the Owensboro Police Department said it happened at about 10:15 Monday night at the Eagles Gas Station in the 1800 block of Triplett Street.

The OPD said the suspect assaulted the driver of the vehicle before stealing it with a 4-year-old child inside.

Officers spotted the vehicle minutes later in the 3500 block of New Hartford Road.

Police say they pursued the vehicle until it crashed in the 3000 block of Legion Park Drive, where the suspect fled on foot before being apprehended by officers.

The OPD said while officers were taking the suspect into custody, a Good Samaritan brought the child to the Owensboro Police Department advising he had found the child abandoned in the 2100 block of Breckenridge Street.

Police said the child was unharmed.

The suspect, 26-year-old Jacob “Trace” Cameron of Owensboro, was taken to Regional Hospital.

He faces preliminary charges of Robbery, Wanton Endangerment, Kidnapping, Fleeing Police, and Trafficking in Synthetic Drugs.

Police say Cameron was also wanted on five warrants.
