In its first ordinance of the year, the Evansville City Council addresses something that wasn't even on its radar a year ago.

Each year, the Evansville City Council passes its first ordinance. This year, the vote was to establish a Commission on Food Security. Speaking on the council’s web feed, Councilman Alex Burton says it can’t come soon enough.

“Food insecurity is real. I’m looking forward to this actually getting done and resolve the issue as it relates to food.”

The Commission will have up to twenty five members, with representatives from various non-profits and businesses that deal directly with food insecurity in Evansville.

In other business, the council heard from officials with the COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund of the Greater Evansville Region. The group has dispersed  $2.6 million in donated funds to area agencies dealing with various aspects of the ongoing pandemic.
