The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 43-year-old Peter Russell.
The coroner’s office listed two hometowns for Russell: Evansville and Princeton.
The shooting happened Friday afternoon at Stringtown Road and Reis Avenue, where Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputies attempted to arrest Russell on a federal drug warrant.
Authorities said Russell crashed his car into a police cruiser and a utility pole, and then brandished a machete.
A female passenger complied with orders to leave the vehicle.
Police said Russell then pointed a handgun at an officer and fired before shooting at more officers.
Multiple officers returned fire, hitting Russell.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
One officer was checked out for a minor injury.
