Two suspects were arrested after being shot by officers following a gun battle in the Union Township bottoms Friday evening.
During a news conference Sunday, Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding recounted the events that put the suspects, 27-year-old Diana Ellmers and 28-year-old Cade Kirk, in local hospitals with wounds that are described as not life-threatening.
Wedding says a deputy, who isn’t being named yet, encountered the pair after a day-long search Friday in relation to stolen items and vehicles. Wedding says Ellmers shot at the deputy, who returned fire, hitting Kirk, while Ellmers ducked behind an out building at the Old Dog Town Tavern.
“She disappeared shortly and then reappeared, and fired multiple rounds at the deputy again. Several of those rounds struck our squad car.”
Wedding says Kirk ran away, but surrendered a couple of hours later. Ellmers was shot when she refused to surrender after being found outside a nearby home.
Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding says it’s the first time in his four decades in law enforcement that he remembers two suspects being shot during the same incident in Vanderburgh County.
