Unless a moratorium on evictions and utility shutoffs is extended beyond Friday, about 2,400 customers of the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility will begin seeing their water shut off.

Local officials say that doesn’t need to happen, if customers take action now.

In a rain shower outside the Civic Center in Evansville Thursday afternoon, interim executive director Mike Labitzke of the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility said that despite efforts over the past two months to communicate the urgency, only about a hundred and fifty of their customers who are facing shutoff have contacted them to arrange a payment plan that would avoid losing their water service.

“We’re strongly encouraging people to call customer service at the water and sewer utility. We’ve extended the payment arrangement length to six months to ease the burden of paying that back bill.”

There is a utility and rental assistance open house scheduled for Saturday from 10am to noon at the CK Newsome Center. Representatives from the various agencies providing the assistance will be there to answer questions.
