EPD: Officer Shoots Man Armed with Knife, Gas Can

File

Evansville Police say a man shot by an officer is expected to survive.

Officers were called to the 2900 block of Ree Street -- on Evansville’s Southeast Side -- at about 8:20 Tuesday night for a man carrying a gas can and a knife and threatening to set his mother’s house on fire.

When officers arrived, they found 35-year-old Donald Cleo Woosley Jr.

In a release, the EPD said officers told Woosley to drop the knife and the gas can, but he refused and approached them.

The EPD said the officers retreated from their positions, while continuing to tell Woosley to drop the knife.

After moving back about 2 car lengths, police said Woosley continued to advance and one of the officers fired his weapon about 7 times, hitting Woosley in the arm and the abdomen.

The EPD said Woosley fell to the ground and the officers rendered medical aid until an ambulance arrived.

AMR took Woosley to a hospital, where police said he’s expected to survive his injuries.
