Authorities have released the identity of a two-year-old boy who died in a fish pond on Evansville’s East Side.

Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear says Carter Pickerell died Monday afternoon after being pulled from a small backyard pond on Conlin Avenue.

Lockyear said results of an autopsy performed Tuesday indicate the boy drowned.

Evansville Police were called when the child’s father noticed he was missing.

Before officers arrived, the child was found in a next door neighbor’s koi pond.

In a release, the EPD said officers, firefighters, and AMR personnel performed CPR but the lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and Pickerell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and the Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the boy’s death.
