ISP: Car Thief Drove on Greenway, Crashed into Fence

File

Police have arrested an Evansville man accused of fleeing police and driving his Jeep onto a pedestrian and bike trail.

It happened at about 8:35 Monday morning.

Indiana State Police say a trooper saw the driver of a new Jeep improperly pass several vehicles and disregard the traffic light at US 41 at Covert Avenue.

In a release, the ISP said the trooper pursued the vehicle, but the driver continued south on 41 before turning onto Riverside Drive and then driving north on the pedestrian/bike trail that runs alongside the highway.

Police said the driver continued a short distance before veering off the trail and crashing into a wooden fence in the 1200 block of Akin Drive.

The driver climbed out of the vehicle through the window and fled on foot.

Troopers were able to identify the driver as 35-year-old Matthew Dunn.

About a half-hour later, a neighbor saw Dunn knocking on a door at a nearby home. Police were alerted, and Dunn was taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed the Jeep had been stolen from Audubon Chrysler in Henderson.

Dunn was jailed without bond. He faces numerous charges including Resisting Law Enforcement, Auto Theft, and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated.
