A group of local volunteers is turning its attention to feeding low income school children during the extended school closing in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Last week, the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporationannounced it would be providing meals to low income students over spring break this week. A group of local volunteers is working to supplement those meals while looking for ways to fight the long-term food insecurity likely to come from schools being out at least until May.
The Junior League of Evansville is a major partner in the effort because of its work to address food insecurity for the past couple of years.
But feeding kids for more than a month? Evansville fourth ward city councilman Alex Burton acknowledged it is a significant challenge.
He said, “Yeah, but at the same time there’s a big void and if this didn’t exist, I don’t even want to think about how many kids would go without meals.”
The group has branched out as well offering to provide a meal for the United Caring Shelter on Tuesday so the facility can deep clean its food operation.
