Apartment Fire Displaces Residents

File

A discarded cigarette is blamed for an apartment fire on Evansville’s Southeast Side.

Evansville firefighters were dispatched to 2901 Ravenswood Drive at about 9:30 Sunday morning.

In a release, EFD Division Chief Mike Larson said a resident of a downstairs apartment reported her bedroom was on fire.

Crews arrived three minutes later to find flames visible from the apartment.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames with no fire damage beyond the apartment of origin.

But the building did sustain minor smoke damage and Larson said some occupants were likely displaced.

The Red Cross was called to assist those occupants.

No people were injured in the fire but a pet cat died. Larson said another ran away.

He said the fire was ruled accidental, caused by a discarded cigarette.
