Fire Damages Cemetery Building

File

Authorities say a fire at an Evansville cemetery appears to be an accident.

Central Dispatch sent Evansville firefighters to Park Lawn Cemetery just before 7:00 Tuesday morning after receiving reports of a fire in the cemetery’s equipment shop.

The first unit to arrive at the cemetery on S. Green River Road reported a garage fire and asked the next truck to hook up to a hydrant for more water.

A firefighter on scene said a backhoe and diesel fuel were stored in the burning building.

In a release, EFD Division Chief Mike Larson said crews got the fire under control in just over five minutes.

The fire in the detached building was reportedly “tapped out” in about 15 minutes.

Larson said fire and heat caused significant damage to the pole barn-type building.

He said the fire was considered accidental although the cause remained under investigation.

There were no injuries reported.
